Weekly Art Classes

The weekly classes cover a wide range of media  including charcoal, soft pastel, oil pastel, ink, watercolour, acrylics, collage and mixed media. There is an opportunity to explore everything from still life to landscapes to portraits. Classes aim to be enjoyable, friendly and supportive with regular demonstrations and one to one guidance. We also undertake occasional gallery visits and sketch trips and students have the opportunity to display work in informal class exhibitions from time to time.   

A £30 deposit is needed to secure your place on any course.

Drawing and Painting for Beginners & Improvers  (with an introduction to beginners acrylics)

12 weeks starting 9th Jan 2020 @ Ranmoor Parish Centre, 5 Ranmoor Park Road, Sheffield, S10 3GX

This 12 week course will include drawing, watercolour and ink work including the themes of spring flowers, a tea and cake still life and an impressive owl in charcoal. There will also be an introduction to complete beginners acrylics with subjects ranging from impasto landscapes to flamboyant flamingos, giving you the chance to create several pieces in this bold and enjoyable medium. A sketch trip to the winter gardens in Sheffield will also give you a fun opportunity to draw out and about in a group.

(Please note there will break at half term on 20th Feb and the sketch trip will be on 12th March)

You will create a charcoal miners face and a colourful acrylic portrait and learn to use conte sticks to recreate a Renior style figure. Other projects include watercolour flowers and a Norfolk windmill amongst other subjects. A sketch trip to the winter gardens in Sheffield will also give you a fun opportunity to draw out and about in a group.

Drawing and Painting for Improvers

12 weeks starting 6th Jan 2020 @ St.Andrews Church Hall, Nether Edge. S11 9AL

This term we will be getting creative with acrylics, charcoal, ink and watercolours including the theme of portraits of people in their homes & workplaces and a visit to a related portrait exhibition in Sheffield. We will also be painting a pretty tea and cake still life, sunny lavender and bees and some atmospheric charcoal landscapes amongst other things. Plenty to keep you inspired!

(Please note there will be no classes on 17th Feb for half term. Gallery visit on 27th Jan)

Drawing for the Terrified part II 

6 weeks starting 6th Jan @ The Art House, 8 Backfields, Sheffield, S1 4HJ

This is a part 2 drawing course for those who have done Drawing for the Terrified part 1. We will continue to look at basic drawing techniques and improve on skills previously learnt such as accurate observational drawing, proportions and shading. Exciting new subject matter and materials will also be introduced including creating your own mark making tools, using charcoal and chalk on tinted paper and learning about drawing the human head!

Watercolours for the Terrified  Part I 

6 weeks starting 24th Feb @ The Art House, 8 Backfields, Sheffield, S1 4HJ

This 6 week introduction to watercolours is suitable for complete beginners or those who would like to learn from scratch. We will start with basic techniques in the form of sample sheets and move on to creating several step by step pieces including a watercolour landscape.

Over the 6 weeks you will

  • Create samples of washes, glazes and other techniques
  • Learn colour mixing and create a colour wheel
  • Use household items to create textures and highlights
  • Create finished watercolour pieces
